  • Entry:
    Visitors from EU countries don´t need a visa for a stay up to 90 days. The passport must be valid for 6 months.
  • Health:
    The normal vaccinations such as tetanus, polio etc. should be up to date. Malaria is found only in some regions (Mpumulanga/Kruger National Park, Limpopo, KwaZulu-Natal, Kalahari). The probability of malaria ist rare. Consult a regional pharmacy. In addition to malaria prophylaxis insect repellants and mosquito nets can be effective
  • Money:
    The local currency ist the South African Rand (R 1 = 100 cents, the present exchange rate you will find here), which exchanges with the major international currencies. You can change without problems at the airport or in almost all credit institutes. Traveller Checks and credit cards are accepted all over. Foreign tourists can have their VAT (14 %) refunded at the point of departure, provided they present original tax invoices.
  • Gratuity:
    Normally 10-12 % tip in restaurants.
  • Cell Phone:
    Your cell phone will work in most of the parts of the country.
  • Electricity:
    The electricity supply is 220/230 volts AC, 50 Hz. Adaptors can be purchased in super markets.
  • Medical system:
    The private medical facilities equal the best in the world. A large network of hospitals offer very good service. Please make sure that you have a travel health insurance. You need a credit card for immediate payments. The private Bayview Hospital in Mosselbay has the newest medical treatment technology.
  • Time:
    In the European summer South Africa has the same time. In the European winter South Africa is 1 hour ahead CET.
  • Driving:
    You have to get used to left-hand traffic. Non-residents must have a driving licence issued and vaild in their own country.
  • Climate (Mossel Bay):
    Mosselbay has the mildest climate in the world - second only to Hawaii (Guiness Book of Records). Along the Garden Route we have “Mediterranean climate”.
