The Garden Route is a wonderful nature paradise along the Indian Ocean, streching up to the semi desert “Little Karoo” - a route with so different landscape.
It is one of the most popular holiday destinations of South Africa. Officially the route starts in Swellendam and finishes in Port Elizabeth. The most beautiful parts are situated between Mosselbay and Storms River in the “Tsitsikamma National Park”. In the heart of this route you will find the town of Knysna with a beautiful lagoon, Natures Valley and - behind the mountains - Oudtshoorn, the old “Ostrich Town”.
Here you can enjoy high cliffs and magnificent bays, long beaches & tropical forests. In the nearby Outeniqua and Tsitsikamma mountains there are many rivers which run trough green coastal plains to the ocean.
Mossel Bay (Mussel-Bay), a coastal town and harbour, is situated on a spectacular peninsula surrounded by the warm Indian Ocean.
Mossel Bay became famous when Bartolomeus Dias had called at this coast in 1488. Here he found a spring with fresh water. The first Post Office on southern African soil was founded in Mossel Bay when Pedro de Ataide in 1500 had left a letter in a shoe under a large milkwood tree. Today the tree is a national monument.
Already hundreds of years ago Mossel Bay was famous for its beautiful beaches. But only last century Mossel Bay was selected as a tourist resort.
Depending on your interest, you can spend the whole day on the beach or visit the cultural highlights in the region.
Whales and dolphins regularly come to the bay. "Seal Island" must be visited to observe seals, comorans & gannets. Nature presents itself with a grandious variety.
Mossel Bay is the starting point for your trip along the Garden Route. Enjoy the wonderful south coast of South Africa!
